DSM honored with New Jersey Governor's Environmental Excellence Award, opens solar field

December was an eventful month for member company DSM, which received accolades from the NJDEP for its sustainability programs at the same plant in Belvidere where it recently opened a solar generation facility.

On December 8, 2014, DSM was honored with the 2014 Governor's Environmental Excellence Award in the Healthy & Sustainable Business category.

DSM, which has its North American headquarters in Parsippany, was honored for its achievements in improving and protecting the environment in New Jersey and promoting sustainable business practices. DSM, long an advocate for corporate environmental stewardship, was recognized for its ongoing activities to make its DSM Nutritional Product's production plant in Warren County, NJ one of the most environmentally friendly facilities in the state and an example of sustainable business practices.

The DSM plant located in both Belvidere and White Township was recognized for the installation of a state of the art 10 MW cogeneration plant, which reduce yearly plant emissions of NOx and CO by 48 tons and 11 tons respectively, construction of a 6 MW solar field to supply clean and renewable energy to the site, the 100% composting of over 6,000 annual tons of wastewater treatment biosolids, as well as continuing work to reduce site water consumption by exploring the feasibility to use 500,000 gallons a day of treated effluent to meet the site's cooling tower needs. Additionally, the DSM site reached a 92% recycling/reuse rate with its biosolids and more than 900 tons of other recyclables, and has partnered with the US Department of Energy in its Save Energy Now Leader initiative to reduce energy use.

DSM and its Warren County facility also run a number of other programs and initiatives designed to reduce the site's environmental impact, reduce the carbon footprint of products produced there, and to encourage employees to embrace environmental sustainability at work, home and in the community.

The Governor's Environmental Excellence Award is the State of New Jersey's premier environmental awards program recognizing outstanding environmental performance, programs and projects in the state. These awards honor and recognize individuals, businesses, educators, institutions, communities, youth and others who have made significant contributions to environmental protection in New Jersey.

Hugh Welsh, president of DSM North America, said, "DSM is honored to receive the Governor's Environmental Excellence Award. We appreciate Governor Christie's recognition of our dedication, and the dedication of our employees, to reducing our overall carbon footprint, our embrace of renewable energy and our genuine commitment to improving our sustainability as a company. We will continue with our goal of being a model corporate citizen in New Jersey and in every community where we have the privilege to operate."

Just a few days after receiving this award, DSM officially opened its solar generation facility, which played a key role in the company's selection for the Governor's Environmental Excellence Award.

The solar panels were glazed with DSM's proprietary KhepriCoat anti-reflective glass coating, the company's flagship product for the solar market. The coating is applied to the cover the glass of the solar modules and strongly reduces the reflection of sunlight. This increases the energy output of these modules up to 4%, improving the efficiency of solar modules and reducing the cost of the energy produced.

Highlights about DSM's Solar Generation Facility:

The Belvidere solar field project is a 6 Megawatt solar generation facility that will provide approximately 6,437,020 kilowatts annually. This will produce approximately 30-40% of the Belvidere plant's electricity needs at peak production.

The Belvidere solar field also offsets CO2 emissions from the grid by more than 4,563 Metric Tons annually.

In order to accommodate the field, nearly 100 trees were removed. Those trees have since been replanted and can be viewed on site.

DSM's solar project in Belvidere, New Jersey, is one of the largest solar installations globally at a supply chain site.

CCNJ joins the State of New Jersey in congratulating DSM for its commitment to sustainable manufacturing.
